History of Maninagar
Maninagar was originally an 'Inami Jamin' (Land) and it belonged to Seth
Manekalal Manilal.
Maneklal Seth with help of Kazi & Co (Brahmkshatriya in Khadia) planned
Maninagar first Garden Area. It was planned in such a manner that each house had
a back space / a gali for Harijan to collect wastes etc.
Mukti medan was kept as an open place for general works for people and its
charges were shared by surrounded plot holders. There were only 3 bungalows
earlier to year 1900. Janakkaka's (janakrdave@juno.com) house, next to
Kinariwal's though was originally of Manilala Abhechand (Manilal Abbha) and
Gandhiji stayed in that house at Maninagar for few days and third was called a
Lal Bungalow near to Janakkaka's house (now flats are there).
Manekalal Seth also with his partner Nandlal Seth built their bunglows. There
was no transport facility at all. Every day one had to go to city but when
Kinariwala Purushottamdas purchased the bungalow, he had a horse carriage so he
use to help. People of Maninagar had to catch water from well which was behind
Nandlal Seth's bungalow which is now a Muni.School in Mahdev area. If present
persons have kept the stone carved on the bunglow of Maneklal, you may find it
near Mataji's deri near Dr.Dave's hospital which is near Mahadev.
Maninagar name was given by Manekala Seth, his wife's name was Maniben...
Maninagar had no Railway Station. So all requested the railway for Flag Station.
The Railway Authorities told that if at least 50 tickets are sold per day, we
can think for it. So few people from Maninagar used to buy tickets even if not
required to make the total of 50 per day, so that we can get Railway Station.
After sometime the trains started to stop as Railway Authorities were satisfied
for the purchases of the tickets. This was the starting of development after
Railway Station.
Muktimedan name was give by Janakkaka's Grandfather as once during the movements
of Gandhiji, there was a Dhwajvandan arranged in the place. On that day Harijans
were given Mukti from Nagar Brahmin by allowing harijan to participate in the
event.
Earlier, most of the land in Maninagar was on a 'Bhadapata" i.e. on 99 yrs
lease, but as everyone has ups and downs Manekalal had bad time. Plot holders
decided to help him by purchasing plots and the ownership was transferred by him
and was saved from insolvency..
Transport was started first by Munshi Transport Co. from Maninagar to Victoria
Garden, Maninagar to Ahmedabad Railway Station, i.e. two routes were there and
buses use to run at an interval of 1 hr..
That's what our Maninagar was !!! And now we can see that, its just best place
to live in Ahmedabad !!
